So, if  your birthdate corresponds to one of the thirteen astronomical dates shown and you were born during that 16 hour period, then ...

Does that mean you have two signs? Hmmm.

You deserve an explanation.

It began a long long time ago and takes 26,000 years to observe.

I'll give you the short version.

I think I am going to start my own version of the Zodiac based on astronomical data. I'm calling it The Zodiac 2.0

Followers of Western Astrology, using the tropical zodiac, have been using an outdated zodiac based on the 'Age of Aires' which ended around 67bc when the sun entered the 'Age of Pisces'. The 'Age' we are in is determined by the constellation the sun is in on the Vernal Equinox (the first day of spring). Since 67bc the sun has always been in Pisces.

How does the sun move from Age to Age? A wobble in the Earth causes the Precession of the Equinoxes, a 26,000 year long cycle that sees the constellations apparently move counter clockwise behind the sun, so that each constellation has a turn hosting the sun on the Vernal Equinox. On average, it takes 2160 years for the sun to move through each Age. It used to be Aires, for now it's Pisces but in the future, it will be Aquarius.

We need to make an adjustment over to the new Zodiac 2.0 based on the Age of Pisces. Do you want to know when the sun enters the Age of Aquarius? I can tell you. Read on.

My interest is in astronomy, specifically following the path of the planets, moon and sun through the zodiac. Your 'sign' should be based on - in which constellation the sun resides on your birthday. This is not always the case because of the Precession from one age into the next.

If you think you are Gemini, you are Taurus. If you think you are Libra, you are actually Virgo. If your sign is Scorpio, you could be 'Ophiuchus' or Libra  but never Scorpio.

  It's written in the stars

  Precession of the Equinoxes:

This is just one of the reasons why the dates and signs don't line up. What's precession all about?

Think of a slow moving train moving counterclockwise in a big circle around you.
  The Zodiac:

Another reason why everything is amiss. What's this I hear about there being thirteen constellations in the zodiac and not twelve.

The astronomical date is when the sun is crossing the IAU (International Astronomers Union) border that separates two constellations. It takes 16 hours for the sun to cross a border.

For example:  On  Apr 18 the sun  is  leaving  Pisces and entering Aries, then leaving Aries on May 13 and entering Taurus.

The astrological  dates are based on the Tropical Zodiac, which is based on seasonal  changes and not the actual date the sun moves through a constellation.
